For some, online dating is still taboo - something they don't really want to admit to, and will happily concoct a backstory to gloss over, should they actually meet anyone.

And reassuringly, I'm far from alone - with new stats showing a fairly sizeable third of UK couples now meeting online. Which is all 'aww' for them. But for those of you who haven't tried it - what's it really like to date online? Is it the modern day solution to finding the perfect partner? Or just another way to explore the hells of dating?

Well I'm probably not any kind of expert um, I'm still single but I like to think I've learned a few things about it along the way. So here's my guide to the goods and bads of online dating. With online dating, at least you know they're all single. Well, the ones with the photos definitely are. That or just MENTAL. You have tons of choice - Yes, no more once overs of the club, crossing your fingers for someone even adequately attractive to consider having a snog with, or face the more principled but smoochless exit alone.

You can afford to be fussy - When you're limited to pulling one of the or so guys in a pub, not all of whom are actually single, or might not actually fancy you the idiots , you can end up lowering your standards somewhat I think this is why pubs supply alcohol. But online, when you have hundreds of guys asking you out, you'll ignore most sozzages , reply to several, but only really consider dating a few in strictly ranked order.

You're basically in charge of everything. You can pre-vet them - Aside from the actually being single thing, you can suss out loads about them before you actually go on a date - from stuff in common music, films, a love of eggs florentine , to politics and basic values. In a subtle, non grill-like way obvs.

If they refuse, I usually think it's because there's issues in both these areas. It's easy to walk away from - If things don't work out, there's not drama with the mutual friend who set you up, or having to sit beside them at the next board meeting um, people who go to board meetings. They just fade into the miasma of dating faces and you meet up with number two on the list weirdly, often the second best guy turns out to actually be better.

You can multi-date - In fact it's hard to avoid it. You're less likely to get too attached too soon, or freak out if he isn't as into you. Because - aside from knowing how awesome you are anyway - you have a load of other guys telling you this in message format.

This guy's sent you his number, and that one's ringing you for a chat tonight - just before you meet award-winning playwright for your first probably quite intellectual date.

And what's that? Sometimes you feel like your head might explode. They still have baggage - Yes, they might be single, but just because they're looking for dates doesn't mean they're looking for love. There are guys who aren't over their ex, and are desperately trying to date their way out of it.

Some are still so hurt they need to hurt a few women to get over it. Others just don't want anything serious, and see dating as an easy way to hook up with women. So rather than making assumptions, find out about their relaysh history as early as possible - ideally at the message stage.

Then you can avoid any nasty surprises. So there you have it - a fairly even split as far as goods and bads go. But I still think it's worth doing - at the worst you'll have some very entertaining pub stories and at best some actually boyfriend-worthy snog options.
